Hoya 77mm Circular Polarizer HD Hardened Glass 8-layer Multi-Coated Filter Reviews
48 of 49 people found the following review helpful Easy to clean the glass surfaces., February 2, 2009 By PhotoBug "PhotoBug" (Philadelphia, PA USA) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: Hoya 77mm Circular Polarizer HD Hardened Glass 8-layer Multi-Coated Filter (Electronics) After having problems with the ability to clean filters' surfaces, and needing to buy 2 polarizers (I always have a spare) for my new Canon 24-105mm pro lens for my Canon 5D full-frame SLR digital body, I ordered several different polarizers in 77mm size for testing: I'd keep the winner. All of the polarizers named in this review had front threads for filter stacking and lens cap attachment.
My problem with cleaning the polarizers' glass surfaces: When a drop of rain or some spray from a garden's water fountain landed on the polarizer, I could spend 10 minutes wiping the filter and all I did was move smears all over the place; I COULD NOT get the glass clean!!! When shooting into nighttime street lights, the sun, or other light sources, the smears really hurt image quality. It was like shooting through a dirty window.
My tests involved putting a wet fingerprint and some saliva (sometimes you try to blow dust from the filter and you end up depositing some spit on... Read more
7 of 7 people found the following review helpful Excelent, very clear and natural looking, July 30, 2009 Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: Hoya 77mm Circular Polarizer HD Hardened Glass 8-layer Multi-Coated Filter (Electronics) This is the most expensive filter at first look. I'd say it's worth the money. I've been recomended the cheaper Hoya one, but reviewers said they break down easy.
This one seems solid and it does not stain, or it cleans as easy as a Canon L lens.
It takes about 1 stop to 1 1/3 stops of light.
Compared to a Tiffen that I rented, I saw that the Hoya HD has a milder effect on the picture. Can't really make the photo look totaly un-natural.
I use Lightroom to "develop" my photos. After a photo-shoot with the filter, I had nothing to do in the software. Photos looked great.
6 of 7 people found the following review helpful Hoya HD CIR-PL is a real winner, September 29, 2010 By This review is from: Hoya 77mm Circular Polarizer HD Hardened Glass 8-layer Multi-Coated Filter (Electronics) Without a doubt, Hoya has produced a real winner with their HD Digital Filters. This Circular polarizer is first class and ranks in quality with the best Singh-Ray, B+W and others can offer. It is very neutral and will not add any color tint what so ever to your photographs. Let me break it down by the star rating:
Durability - I drop things. Thankfully, I have not yet dropped my lenses, but I have dropped this filter a few times from heights of up to about 4 feet. Not a scratch or dent, not even to the finish. If I were to hand you this filter today, you would think it was new!
Product Design - this is a thin ring filter and won't vignette my Sigma 10-20 until about 12mm. (BTW, I don't usually use a polarizer on a wide angle lens and neither should most people. It is a good test for vignetting though.) Much better than my old B+W thin version and the Hoya has threads to hold my cap on. WOW I can't think of a better design for a filter of this type. I just... Read more
