outstanding photo quality, May 24, 2012 By Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: Sigma 150-500mm f/5-6.3 DG APO OS (Optical Stabilizer) HSM AF Lens Kit, for Nikon AF Cameras with Tiffen 86mm UV Filter, Lens Cap Leash, Professional Lens Cleaning Kit (Electronics) I was very leery that this relatively inexpensive 500 mm lens would not be able to perform and there is a definite learning curve. But I've gotten some absolutely razor sharp close up bird photographs with it and I'm super impressed with its quality. Believe it or not, even hand held and as low as 1/60th of a second with the optical stabilizer on, the results are very good. The key is to try to stay at F8 or F11 if possible and, most importantly, to fine-tune the focus manually after the autofocus gets the image 99% focused. It's not the fault of the lens or the camera (Nikon D300), it's just that the depth of field is so extremely narrow that to get the catch light in the eye of the bird absolutely perfect, a little human intervention is necessary. The lens does well at wide open aperture, but focus is so critical there, it's a bit frustrating.
The lens is rugged - I've taken it through rain forests, long hikes in Costa Rica, in the rain, mud, etc. and it's holding up... Read more

Wanted to wait a few months before I reviewed it. I took this lens among a few others with me to Yellowstone for a week. Needless to say other than landscape shots this is the only lens I used. All pictures were shot hand held and I could not have asked for more, this lens did an amazing job. Even around home I shoot humming birds early morning in low light before work and they are great. I read about the lens needing a lot of light, that is true if you need to shoot at iso 100. In low light I crank up the iso sometimes as high as 3200 and the pictures still turn out very nice(helps to have a camera that does a nice job with higher iso) If you cant make this lens work for you than you will need to spend thousands more for what in my opinion is not worth it unless you make you living with a camera! Just get it, you will be pleased.
